Serious Margaritas

Although this cocktail is NOT synonymous with American football at all, it is my preferred football drink. Here’s why: Someday, our team will be in the Superbowl, but for now, we love watching football each week, enjoying the games with friends, and, sometimes, weeping about the last game of the season. As someone who lived abroad, I know that American football isn’t loved by everyone, represents big industry sports, is strange entertainment, and (not to be taken lightly) involves health risks. At the same time, I’m trying hard to embrace my less serious, lighthearted side, and football fits right into that. SO, somehow margaritas seem worthy of football-watching.

All I need for a game is a bit of salsa, a ton of tortilla chips, and a gallon of these SERIOUS MARGARITAS. These are serious because they contain almost NINE cups of tequila and two other simple ingredients: agave and lime. Since tequila is made from the agave plant, this drink really is just made from two things: derivatives of agave and the lime tree. It’s almost completely natural, people!

Serious Margaritas
Serves 20 (in a 10-ounce rocks glass filled halfway with ice)

8 ½ cups tequila blanco
4 ¼ cups bottled key west lime juice
3 ¼ cups agave nectar
3 limes, halved and sliced thin

  1. Combine all ingredients except lime slices in a gallon container, stir vigorously until the agave nectar dissolves.

  2. Serve! This drink is delicious served with a lot of ice and a slice of lime in a rocks glass.
